Summary

The ultimate anti-war novel, set in a lunatic asylum that happens to be a U.S. Army Air Force base in World War II. Captain John Yossarian is a bombardier who has realized a terrifying truth: people are trying to kill him. He wants to be grounded for insanity, but there's a catch—Catch-22. If you're crazy, you can be grounded; but if you ask to be grounded, you're clearly sane, because only a sane person would want to escape combat. Heller uses this circular logic as the engine for a darkly comic masterpiece about the absurdity of war, the madness of bureaucracy, and the struggle of the individual against a system designed to destroy him.

Why Read This?

It gave us a phrase that has become part of the language—a 'Catch-22' for any no-win situation. Heller's fractured, repetitive, time-jumping structure perfectly mirrors the disorientation of trauma and the circular logic of institutional insanity. Beneath the absurdist comedy is a devastating portrait of war's true horror. As the novel progresses, the jokes become darker, the deaths more senseless, and Yossarian's desperation more palpable. It teaches us that sometimes the only sane response to an insane world is to run away. It is a survival guide for anyone trapped in a system that doesn't make sense.

About the Author

Joseph Heller (1923–1999) served as a bombardier in World War II, flying sixty combat missions. After the war, he spent eight years writing Catch-22, working on it during his commute while holding down a job in advertising. The novel was a slow-burning success, becoming a touchstone for the anti-war movement of the 1960s. Heller's subsequent novels never matched its impact, and he famously responded to a critic who pointed this out: 'Who has?' His one masterpiece was enough to change the landscape of American literature.
