Joseph Conrad (1857–1924) was born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in Poland, then part of the Russian Empire. He did not learn English until his twenties, yet he became one of the greatest stylists in the language. He spent twenty years as a merchant sailor before turning to writing.
