Philip Roth
Philip Roth (1933-2018) was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, the setting for much of his most powerful fiction. The son of first-generation American Jews, he studied at Bucknell University and the University of Chicago before publishing his debut collection Goodbye, Columbus (1959), which won the National Book Award and immediately established him as a major new voice. Portnoy's Complaint (1969) made him both famous and controversial, catapulting him to celebrity while drawing fierce criticism from some in the Jewish community.
