Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592) was a French nobleman, statesman, and wine grower who served as mayor of Bordeaux and counselor to kings. After the death of his closest friend, Étienne de La Boétie, Montaigne retreated to his estate and began the literary project that would consume the rest of his life.
