J. M. Coetzee

John Maxwell Coetzee (born 1940) grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, in an Afrikaner family that spoke English at home. He studied mathematics and English at the University of Cape Town, earned a PhD in linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin, and spent several years working as a computer programmer in London before returning to academia.
