Ralph Ellison

Ralph Ellison (1913–1994) was born in Oklahoma City, named after Ralph Waldo Emerson by a father who hoped his son would become a poet. He studied music at the Tuskegee Institute before moving to Harlem, where encounters with Richard Wright and Langston Hughes turned him toward literature.
