Muriel Spark

Muriel Spark (1918–2006) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, to a Jewish father and an English mother. She spent several years in Central Africa during World War II, working in political intelligence, before settling in London and beginning her literary career as a poet and critic. Her conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1954 proved decisive—she began writing fiction shortly after, and the austere, omniscient narrative voice that became her hallmark owed much to her theological convictions about the relationship between the creator and the created. This author hub collects 1 work in the Canon Compass ranking, led by The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
