Madeleine L'Engle
Madeleine L'Engle was born Madeleine L'Engle Camp in 1918 in New York City and spent portions of her childhood in Europe, experiences that fostered a lifelong sense of wonder and displacement. She began writing as a child and published her first novel, The Small Rain, in 1945. A Wrinkle in Time was famously rejected by over twenty-six publishers before finally being accepted by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1962. It went on to win the Newbery Medal in 1963 and became one of the most beloved and frequently challenged books in American literary history.
