Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) lived a life as gothic as his fiction. Orphaned as a child, estranged from his foster father, married to his thirteen-year-old cousin, and perpetually impoverished, he drifted through editorial positions in Richmond, Philadelphia, and New York, producing masterpieces between bouts of drinking and despair. His death in Baltimore at age forty remains one of literature's great unsolved mysteries.
