Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a Scottish-born British physician and writer who created the most famous detective in literary history. Born in Edinburgh and educated at the University of Edinburgh Medical School—where his professor Joseph Bell's methods of deduction inspired the character of Sherlock Holmes—Doyle began writing stories while waiting for patients in his struggling medical practice. The first Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in 1887, and within a few years Holmes had become a cultural phenomenon.
